Today you are one step closer to solving a problem you have not been able to solve on your own...

one step closer to creating a more fulfilling life.

Dr. Hayley Silverman, a San Diego therapist and Clinical Psychologist, works collaboratively with adults, children, and families to achieve positive solutions to relationship, parenting, academic, career, health, and personal concerns. Building on the strengths and experiences that each individual and family brings to psychotherapy, Dr. Silverman helps clients enhance their own abilities to make changes in their lives. Tailoring her therapy to her clients' individual needs and personalities, she employs strategies taken from solution-focused, family systems, cognitive-behavioral, and behavior modification. Dr. Silverman generally practices from a humanistic/ positive psychology theoretical orientation, which suggests that limited results are attained in psychotherapy when the focus is solely on problem resolution. More meaningful outcomes occur in psychotherapy when a client's innate strengths and independent perspectives are encouraged to prevail in daily life, as these changes ultimately result in a more fulfilling life.

Whether the issue involves your child, teen, family or relationship, Dr. Silverman will work creatively and thoughtfully to help you better understand and resolve any challenges and move forward. By utilizing the most current, integrative methods of psychotherapy and psychological testing, she can help clearly identify the nature of a problem, the contributing factors, and possible steps towards a resolution. Long-standing behavior patterns and negative perceptions need not hold you back from experiencing a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

If you’re looking for extra support and guidance through a challenging situation, or you are simply ready to move forward in a positive direction in your life, Dr. Silverman looks forward to working with you towards achieving your goals.

Psychotherapy for Children

For concerns including behavioral problems, anger/opposition, depression, anxiety, learning issues, adoption, & Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD or ADD).  With the parent as “the expert” on their child, Dr. Silverman develops a plan to address issues in a manner congruent with the values of the family and community. Parents are encouraged to be involved with the child’s therapy in most cases, because the parents will be implementing corrective strategies and providing ongoing encouragement at home. Children also tend to be more comfortable talking about personal issues with a family member in the room. Dr. Silverman works from a mostly rewards-based orientation, yet she impresses the importance of routine, structure, and predictable consequences. She is also familiar with attachment parenting, positive parenting, and parenting in accordance with a child’s temperament.

Psychotherapy for Teens / Adolescents

To assist with issues such as anger, oppositional behavior, academic difficulties, depression, anxiety, impulsivity, self-injury, and relationship problems with peers or family members. Parents are typically involved in at least some therapy sessions; however, exceptions are made in special circumstances. In general, parents are a valuable resource towards providing important perspectives on the teen’s current functioning, personal history, and family history.

Family Therapy

Common issues include negotiating different parenting styles, birth of a child, becoming a new mother, relocation of the family, deployment of a family member, divorce, remarriage,  blended families, step-parenting, financial loss and its impacts, addition of a sibling or grandparent to the household, grief over death of a family member, reaction to natural disasters, and medical or psychiatric illness of a family member.  In addition, the bulk of Dr. Silverman’s work with children and adolescents addresses the larger family system to some degree because, many times, a child or adolescent displays a “symptom” in response to a larger family problem or issue. Modern family life is anything but simple.  Dr. Silverman can help you re-discover the positive capabilities your family possesses.

Individual Psychotherapy for Adults

Presenting issues generally include adjusting to a new phase in life, career and financial stress, relationship problems, depression, bipolar disorder, post-partum depression, anxiety disorders, grief, gender and sexuality issues, coping with medical illnes, post-traumatic stress disorder, and adjusting to brain injury. Dr. Silverman offers an intelligent yet compassionate approach where the individual’s perspective and feelings about the problem are of paramount importance. The ultimate goal is to offer clients the tools they need to grow independently.

Couples / Marital Therapy

For issues including improving communication, intimacy issues, recovering from infidelity, and deciding whether to remain in or end a relationship. Therapy looks at the relationship as an adaptive or maladaptive system. The couple’s goals for therapy are considered of utmost importance.

Utilizing Health Insurance

Although Dr. Silverman accepts reimbursement from multiple health insurance carriers, it is important for clients to understand the unfortunate, negative consequences involved in utilizing their insurance coverage towards paying for health care.

Once a client choses to employ their insurance coverage, managed health care companies have total, exclusive access to all personal, private information about a client. In fact, these companies are allowed greater access to private information than legal authorities and government agencies. The ramifications of this privilege are boundless. There have been reports from several reputable news outlets that the federal government and the insurance industry have developed a national database of medical and mental health records, and all managed care records are reported and stored here. Although Dr. Silverman does not have solid information about whether these reports are factual or rumored, when a client authorizes Dr. Silverman to utilize his/her health care coverage towards paying for professional services, Dr. Silverman loses any ability to monitor or regulate the information that managed care companies demand and receive from her office in exchange for reimbursement of services.

Additionally, once clients utilize their health insurance benefits, managed care companies are permitted to make decisions about what type of treatment your doctor may provide you with (regardless of your doctor's recommendation), future premium amounts, and what conditions can be excluded from your future coverage. Additionally, your managed care company reserves the right to refuse payment at any time (no rationale required) for any services rendered to you by any health professional that you currently work with, have worked with, or will work with in the future.  This situation can result in large unpaid balances to your health care providers, for which you are individually responsible. Clients and their doctors have no recourse in resolving this situation with managed care companies.

Should clients chose to use their health insurance coverage, Dr. Silverman accepts many insurance plans as an In-Network Provider, including Aetna, Cigna, Blue Shield of California, Tricare/Triwest, United Behavioral Health/United Healthcare, HealthNet/ MHN, and Pacificare/Optum Health. Please inquire with her office to discuss whether she is currently accepting Anthem Blue Cross coverage as an Out-of-Network Provider. Dr. Silverman accepts all PPO insurance plans but does not work with EAP benefits.

Please contact Dr. Silverman’s office to discuss specific details regarding utilizing insurance coverage for care provided by her office. Copays and deductibles are due in full at the time of service.

Cancellation Policy

If you do not attend your scheduled therapy appointment and have not notified the office at least 24 hours in advance, please be advised that there is a $100 fee. This charge cannot be billed to insurance.
